We specialize in collecting and processing large amounts of raw unformatted data from multiple varying sources and then publishing that data in coherent volumes of truly searchable content.
At Easy Law Lookup, we want to make the laws and codes of a given state truly accessible to the general public and then use this tool to connect lawyers with potential clients in need of professional services.
The Process
Providing such a service is no trivial task, however. A set of laws and codes for a single state may require more than 750,000 individual edits to be prepared for publication.
To begin with literally tens of thousands of pages of raw data must be collected often from multiple sources, then sorted and collated so that the final publication contains all sections in their proper order. Occasionally some information must be scanned from paper documents.
Next each file must be stripped of hundreds or even thousands of unwanted foreign symbols and third-party formatting codes. Each file may also need to be redacted and revised to conform to legal standards.
In order for pages to be indexed and displayed properly extensive reformatting is required. This includes identifying and breaking out all headings and subheads as well as re-flowing all paragraphs, removing unwanted line-breaks and resetting proper indentation.
Finally, the entire publication must be restyled and then marked up so that it can be cataloged and indexed in a meaningful manner. Our database and indexing scheme is entirely proprietary and was designed from the ground up solely for this application.
And even after all this processing, a highly specialized web service must be developed by well qualified programmers to deliver this data to the end user.
So how do we manage all this? We've developed a technologically advanced process that can provide citizens access to the laws and codes of a given state utilizing a proprietary search engine which is better than most pay services. This process, and the many proprietary programs developed, are the direct result of more than a decade and a half of providing services to county judges and employees in the state of Texas. In the past few years, this tool, which was never specifically targeted for mass public consumption, has seen more than 24 million page views, nonetheless. Our version of the Texas laws and codes has sees as many as 85,000 page views a day.
Although the high volume of traffic generated no doubt increases rankings in the popular search engines, this system is not to be confused with standard search optimization techniques or common click through banner advertising campaigns. This high volume traffic is both targeted and sustained, with the average user clicking on page after page as they read and look for the answer to a legal question, all while relevant attorney information is displayed automatically on every page.
The Technology
Our search engine is unique, not only to publicly accessible resources, but many popular pay ones as well.
We were the first in the world to include extensive hyper-linking throughout our text making many searches truly one-click. The hyper-index tracks all occurrences of all words in a code directly by hyperlink. Because all non-noise words are included in the hyper index there can be literally millions of hyperlinks in a single set of publications. Incidentally, this design makes our sites great for hand-held devices as well as the more traditional computer sources.
Our unique search engine allows multiple types of searches without the need for complicated syntax or commands. Separate easy to use functions are provided for finding terms within phrases, sentences, paragraphs, pages, headings, numbers and even citations. Most standard search engines fine words only within a page or proximity to each other regardless of context.
Built-in intelligence provides smart searches that include various combinations of related words and topics automatically.
Search results are displayed in context complete with parent headings, a feature that is very important when searching the law. Headings are given special emphasis, displaying individual counts in search returns, as well as highlighting within the search results themselves wherever the search terms are found within the heading.
A unique drill down Table of Contents allows concise access without the need to scroll through thousands of headings.
Dual mode viewing allows the user to choose between two styles of display. HTML mode displays text a page and a time with maximum interactive hyperlinking, while text mode allows an entire section to be viewed as one continuous page.
A legal thesaurus and dictionary are also fully integrated. This function will not only display definitions, but show similar spellings, index entries, embedded terms, and even other words that contain the term in its definition. A built in thesaurus displays of related concepts. If there is an entry in Bouvier the term is explained.
Not sure where to search? Super searching allows entire groups of publications to be searched simultaneously in one step. Group searches allow you to quickly identify which codes contain the terms you were searching for.
